L-Carnitine

By Ellen Coleman, RD, MA, MPH

L-Carnitine is marketed with claims that it reduces body fat and promotes muscle development.

Carnitine is used to move fatty acids into the mitochondria, where they are oxidized for ATP production. However, your body can make it yourself, so supplements aren't necessary or helpful. There is no evidence that carnitine increases fat burning or decreases body fat.
